We Change the World Using Media

 

The USC Media Institute (MISC) is an Emmy Award Winning institute whose mission is to change the world using media - through public service announcements, documentaries, feature films, television shows, web episodes, and more.

MISC also provides industry education for Hollywood, original research, events, creative projects, and offers a film minor for students at USC. 

We believe that film and media is the language of the 21st Century, and has a profound impact on individual knowledge, behavior, and society. We are a nonprofit housed within the USC School of Cinematic Arts - widely recognized as one of the most prestigious film schools in the world - and prepare students and professionals to impact the world with prosocial issues in their creative media projects.

This strategy is called Entertainment-Education, which incorporates educational messages in popular entertainment content to raise awareness, increase knowledge, and inspire people to take concrete action to change the world. This strategy has been responsible for helping to dramatically reduce drunk driving, save lives with positive health messages, and much more.

MISC's OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:

  • EDUCATE emerging and established filmmakers and media professionals who are interested in shaping stories that address world problems.

  • SUPPORT media makers in integrating awareness messaging into their storytelling.

  • CREATE cinematic content that allows audiences to experience social issues in an entertaining way.

  • MEASURE SOCIAL IMPACT of pro-social issue media on popular culture in order to influence the expansion of such content

  • PARTNER with organizations and individuals who share our objectives to explore social issues and use the power of media influence to address social challenges

  • DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT STRATEGIES for finding and building audiences for pro-social issue media content across all media platforms

  • MAXIMIZE THE PRESENCE OF PRO-SOCIAL ISSUE MEDIA in existing and future content by becoming a center of excellence that links issue experts to professional content creators.
